If you enjoy climbing at the TCU Rec Climbing Wall, try your hands at some real rocks! Mineral Wells State Park is the perfect place to test your climbing skills: whether you’re a beginner or an advanced climber, there is something for you. Top-Rope routes range in difficulty from 5.4 (easy) to 5.12 (hard). Take a Saturday to enjoy nature a mere 45 minutes from TCU. See what started the climbing hype for yourself at Mineral Wells’ beautiful rock formations full of natural grooves and ledges that are just begging you to climb them. Plus, you may make some friends to hang out with at the Rec Wall later!
$15 with a TCU ID, $20 as a sponsored guest

There will be no Pre-Trip meeting scheduled for this trip although you should receive an email regarding details of the trip from your Trip Leader.
9:30- 10:00 am: Meet at the climbing wall at the Rec
10:00 -11:00 am: Travel to Mineral Wells State Park
11:00- 11:30 am: Arrive, set up climbing routes, and do an icebreaker
11:30-3:30 pm: Climb!
4:00-5:00 pm: Drive back to TCU
Please bring shoes that you are able to hike around in and are supportive. Tennis shoes or hiking boots are required for this trip. We will provide climbing shoes, harnesses, helmets, and gear – but please bring everything else you will need, including layers in case it gets cold while we are climbing. Water is a necessity so please bring a full water bottle as well as your own lunch.
Climbing and scrambling around in the Mineral Wells State Park can be strenuous. Designated trails may be non-existent. While the walk to the climbing area is relatively short, it does include some rough terrain and rocky stairs. Climbers will provide staff with input on the appropriate level difficulty climb to set up, ensuring a challenging and fun time for all participants. Staying well hydrated, taking your time, resting when necessary (but not for too long), and keeping your energy level high is essential. Trip members should be in good physical condition.
TRIP RATING 1 out of 3 – This is a beginner climbing trip.
There are numerous risks and hazards associated with the Mineral Wells State Park. Not dressing appropriately can result in heat or cold illnesses (Hyperthermia or Hypothermia). Rockfall is possible – and helmets must be worn at all times when within the rockfall zone. Not drinking enough water results in dehydration and not being in adequate physical condition can result in sore muscles. Trip members must make a conscious effort to be safe. One person’s disdain for safety will always result in more hardship for the group. If we do have an accident or injury that requires medical attention beyond the scope of our leader’s experience, the trip is immediately over without refund. Our leaders are trained to administer first aid in an outdoor environment; however, while they may be able to treat injuries they cannot always prevent them.
There are restrooms available around the park. There will not be bathrooms along the trails – please plan accordingly.
The trip leaders will research the weather conditions in advance to assess the situation. The trip will be canceled if the weather is dangerous. If you do not receive an email about this, then please be prepared to be out in the weather. Please follow the weather and use your best judgment as well as the packing list to determine what you will personally need to stay warm and dry during the entirety of this trip. Layers are recommended for cold weather and failure to bring proper attire will be detrimental to your experience.
